A Complete Guide to Tattoo Styles (And How to Choose Yours)

Quick Answer

Not sure which tattoo style to choose? This guide covers 8+ styles — B&G realism, color realism, traditional, fine line, watercolor, and more — and helps you pick the right one.

Black & Grey Realism

Uses diluted black ink to achieve photographic depth and tonal range. No outlines — form is built through shading alone. Best for: portraits, animals, nature, emotional subjects. Ages exceptionally well. Spade's primary specialty.

Color Realism

Full-spectrum photorealistic rendering. Vibrant, detailed, stunning when executed well. Best for: tropical birds, koi, florals, vivid wildlife. Requires more touch-up maintenance than B&G, especially in sunny climates. Spade's second specialty.

Traditional (American Traditional)

Bold outlines, flat color fills, iconic imagery (eagles, anchors, roses, daggers). One of the oldest Western tattoo styles. Ages incredibly well because bold lines hold. Limited detail range — the style is about graphic boldness, not photographic nuance.

Neo-Traditional

Traditional's evolved cousin — retains bold outlines but incorporates more detail, color range, and illustrative elements. Think Art Nouveau meets tattoo flash. Great for animal designs, crests, and narrative pieces.

Fine Line

Single-needle or very fine linework creating delicate, almost drawn-on-skin imagery. Minimal shading, lots of negative space. Beautiful when fresh; requires understanding that fine lines can spread and soften over time, especially in high-movement areas.

Watercolor

Soft washes of color with little or no outline, mimicking the look of watercolor paint. Striking when fresh. Fades faster than outlined styles, and the lack of border means colors bleed into skin tone over time. Best for clients who commit to maintaining it.

Geometric and Dotwork

Precise geometric forms and mandala-style designs, often executed in dotwork (stippling) rather than solid lines. Popular in Hawaii for Polynesian-influenced geometric work. Ages cleanly when properly executed.

Surrealism and Illustrative

Beyond photorealism into the imaginative — dreamlike compositions, impossible scenes, conceptual imagery. Combines illustration skill with tattoo technique. A broad category that rewards artists with a strong fine art background.
