What to Expect Getting Your First Tattoo
Quick Answer
Getting your first tattoo? Here's a step-by-step guide — from preparation to aftercare — so you know exactly what to expect before, during, and after your session.
Before the Session: How to Prepare
Preparation makes a real difference in how your session goes. Here's what to do in the 24 hours before:
- —Eat a full meal 1–2 hours before your appointment. Low blood sugar makes your body less resilient to the stress of tattooing — you're more likely to feel lightheaded or nauseous.
- —Stay hydrated. Well-hydrated skin takes ink more smoothly and heals faster.
- —Get a good night's sleep. A rested body handles pain better.
- —Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours. Alcohol thins the blood, which makes you bleed more during the tattoo and can affect how the ink settles.
- —Wear appropriate clothing that gives easy access to the area you're getting tattooed without having to remove everything.
The Session: Step by Step
Here's what actually happens when you sit down:
- 01.Consultation and design review. You and the artist confirm the design, size, and placement. Any last-minute adjustments happen here.
- 02.Stencil application. The artist places a transfer of the design on your skin so you can see exactly where and how it'll look before anything permanent happens.
- 03.Setup and sanitation. Fresh needle out of sealed packaging, fresh ink caps — this should happen visibly in front of you.
- 04.The tattoo itself. The artist works in sections — typically outlines first, then shading and detail. Sessions usually run 1–4 hours for a first tattoo.
- 05.Bandaging and aftercare instructions. You leave wrapped up, with clear instructions for the days ahead.
Pain: An Honest Assessment
Yes, tattoos hurt. But "pain" is a broad word that doesn't capture the variety of sensations involved. Most people describe the sensation as a combination of scratching and burning — intense but manageable. Some areas hurt more than others:
- —Low pain: outer arm, outer thigh, calves, upper back
- —Moderate pain: inner arm, chest, stomach
- —High pain: ribs, spine, hands, feet, neck, inner elbow
For first timers, the outer arm or forearm is often recommended. The skin is thick, there's muscle underneath, and it's a forgiving surface for both the artist and the client.
Aftercare: The Most Important Part
The tattoo is only half the work — healing is the other half. A perfect tattoo can be ruined by poor aftercare.
Basic rules: - Keep the bandage on for 2–4 hours (or longer if using second-skin wrap) - Wash gently with fragrance-free soap, pat dry - Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion 2–3 times per day - Don't pick the peeling skin - Stay out of pools, oceans, and direct sun - Expect some peeling and itching in weeks 1–2 — this is normal
If something looks wrong (excessive swelling, oozing, fever), contact the artist or a medical professional.
