How to Prepare for Your Tattoo Session (Complete Checklist)
Quick Answer
Everything you need to do before your tattoo session — 24 hours before, day-of, during, and after. Be prepared and have the best possible experience.
24 Hours Before Your Session
The day before matters more than most people realize:
- —Eat well throughout the day. Not just the meal before — sustained good nutrition keeps your blood sugar stable.
- —Hydrate. Drink more water than usual. Hydrated skin takes ink more smoothly.
- —Sleep. A rested nervous system handles sustained discomfort far better than an exhausted one.
- —Avoid alcohol. It thins the blood (you'll bleed more), affects hydration, and can compromise ink saturation. 24 hours minimum; 48 is better.
- —Avoid blood thinners — aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil — unless medically necessary.
- —Moisturize the area. Soft, supple skin is easier to work on than dry, rough skin.
Day of Your Session
- —Eat a full meal 1–2 hours before. Not a snack — a real meal. This is the single most important thing you can do.
- —Bring snacks for long sessions. Glucose drops midway through are real and unpleasant.
- —Wear appropriate clothing that gives clean access to the placement area without requiring you to disrobe entirely.
- —Arrive on time. Being rushed adds stress. Give yourself a buffer.
- —Bring something to do. A long session without entertainment gets mentally tough — headphones, a book, a friend.
- —Shower. Clean skin is respectful to the artist and reduces infection risk.
- —Shave the area if it's hairy (or ask the artist — many prefer to do it themselves).
During the Session
- —Breathe. Deep, controlled breathing is the most effective pain management tool you have. Slow exhale on the hard strokes.
- —Communicate. Tell the artist if you need a break, feel lightheaded, or have any concern. Good artists want to know.
- —Stay still. Moving — even involuntary flinching — is the fastest way to ruin a line. Focus on stillness over everything.
- —Eat your snack if the session runs long or you feel your energy dropping.
- —Trust the artist. You've done your research. Now let them work.
After Your Session
- —Follow the aftercare instructions given by the artist. Not the internet — what your artist says.
- —Keep it covered for the recommended time.
- —Don't pick or scratch the peeling skin, no matter how tempting.
- —No ocean, pool, or hot tub until it's fully healed.
- —Protect from sun immediately and long-term.
- —Send a healed photo to the artist — they love seeing it, and it helps them assess the work.
